ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION

This topic is very important for the new passed-out civil engineers or for the freshers. As a fresher and without any experience if you go in the construction work for the first time you will feel nothing wrong. But as the days passed and weeks by weeks you work, you will see that there are many faulty and illegal works done by the workers as well as the mistry. Well I will not say that all the mistries are like that, but there are some mistries who has rough ideas and do faulty works, without any proper understanding and knowledge at the site. They only just do the work for the show off, without any accuracy and proper position.

You might be thinking about how is this possible or why will they do so? The answer is quite simple, just to save the contractor's money they do such kind of work. Because the contractor advise them to do something in less than that of required quantity. In building works you will see that the depth of footing which is required to be 2 meter they will make it as 1.9 meter leaving those 100 mm or 4 inch difference. But later when the engineer-in-charge or DGM comes and find the difference than the exact required they will directly scold at you or ignore you. So be careful about these kinds of faulty works.

In bridges also, tunnels also, embankments, roads, etc. all kinds of faulty works are done there. Faulty works such as they will reduce the areas, reduce the reinforcements in bridges, apply less materials than required, somewhere the depth is less and somewhere the depth is more and most specifically they will use less aggregates or make the work half done without finishing. But in most of the cases I have seen that lots of faulty works occurs in foundation or earthwork.

If I want to talk about building work then there are lots of illegal works are done. The depth of excavation where 2.1 meter is required they will make it as 2 meter and later on 100mm or 4 inch difference is found. The beam where 4 number of reinforcements are required they will give it as 3 numbers or 3½ nos. Sometimes in columns the lateral ties are not provided as well as in beams. In PCC where the proportion is to be made as 1:3:6 they will make it as 1:5:6 and many more. And specifically be careful about slabs. Not talk about more, but you will understand it on the day you go at the site.

Be careful about tunnel and bridge works also. Because if all the works are done with machinery then also there are some works which are to be done manually. And for these kinds of work the contractor doesn't bear to pay more or as required; and tells the workers to use something different only just to adjust the work. In bridge you will find more faulty about reinforcements, in tunnel you will find more faulty about concrete and excavation, In river embankments you will find more faulty soil and its types. So all these faulty leads you to intolerance and can't bear to say anything sice you are new to this work. You only just have to look or say something to do properly but cannot scream at anyone because nobody care's you. They will only just trap you or make bad reputation about your work which further leads to bad career opportunity and can never show any good impression.

How to edit grid systems in Etabs

Okk in the last blog I had discussed about Etabs for beginners. You have got at least some ideas about it. If you have not seen it then click here . But here I am going to discuss how you will edit Grids/Columns in Etabs. As I had said by clicking on "Modify/Show Grid Systems" option a new dialog box appears, their you can edit anything. But you can also do it by different way. On the left side in grid dimensions (plan) you can see that two options are available. One is "Uniform Grid Spacing" and the other is "Custom Grid Spacing". Click on the "Custom Grid Spacing" and you see that Edit Grid Data option is available. Just click on that, and you can edit it as you want by giving the required dimensions in X-axis and Y-axis only. Ok whatever be lets come to the topic. If you have done it like as I have shown earlier then follow those steps. And the one who were new to this blog this is just for that. That's why I underlined with BLUE line an...

How to make Staircase in Etabs

In the last blog I had described about making beams, columns, slabs/roofs in Etabs. But I forgot to tell you how to make staircase. Apology for that. But today in this blog I am going to discuss how to make staircase in Etabs. So before making Staircase first of all delete one side of the slab by single click. But remember one thing in the story side you should have to click "All Stories" so that automatically all slabs will get deleted and required gap and positioning will be appeared.  First click on All Stories After that select one portion of slab   After that go to Edit menu and click on Delete   Then one part of the slab of each story becomes hollow So doing the following steps you can now make the staircase. As for staircase we need hollow section at the top of it, so that it's free to move. In practical field also you can't provide staircase if the roof is covered with slab. Now the main procedure begins for Etabs.  Go to define tab menu and click on Se...

WHAT IS PEDESTAL IN FOOTING ?

During foundation you should always be careful that there is no water present in the excavation pit and the depth should be accurate. So for that you need manwork and labourers to maintain it's accuracy. So before going further for any work just be careful that the depth of foundation is accurate and no error should be made. Because the structure of a building is fully depend upon foundation. And this is general sense that the all the building loads are carried to the foundation i.e., footing.  Before doing any foundation work first of all brick soiling is to be done or sand filling. The building where high rise structures are made, sand filling is done; but the house with ground floor, brick soiling is sufficient. But from where you will get the bricks. Obviously you will have to order or bring it from bricks factory where bricks are made. And after bringing the bricks where you will placed them?  (Actually all these practical knowledge are not taught in the college so ...
